PPE Basics: How to Choose Work Gloves for the Job

The most protective glove is the one people actually keep on their hands. That means matching protection to the real hazard — and not sacrificing dexterity you need for grip you do not.

Match the glove to the hazard

• Sharp sheet metal, glass, blades — ANSI cut level A4+ knit gloves
• General assembly and material handling — polyurethane-coated knits
• Oily parts — nitrile-coated palms; foam nitrile for wet grip
• Impact zones (rigging, demolition) — TPR-backed impact gloves
• Chemicals — unsupported nitrile or butyl, matched to the substance

Fit is a safety feature

A glove one size too large gets caught in rotating parts; one size too small fatigues the hand and ends up in a pocket. Measure across the knuckles and follow the maker's chart — sizes are not consistent between brands.
